Techstars Startup Week Alaska 2020

After a year that has rocked our communities and economies, small business owners across Southeast Alaska are gearing up for 2021 and the new challenges and opportunities it presents.

Join us November 16th -18th for Spruce Root’s Master Class for the New Economy, a free virtual workshop for Southeast Alaska entrepreneurs that is focused on recovery, resilience, and providing resources for success in the upcoming year.

Entrepreneurs who successfully complete their recovery plan will be encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $5,000 from Spruce Root.

During a series of interactive online workshops, Master Class participants will engage with expert presenters and participate in panel discussions on financial planning, strategies for staying afloat, and mental health for entrepreneurs.

Over the course of the workshop, participants will:

• develop a one-year recovery plan for their business
• explore and dispel internal limiting beliefs around business ownership
• become familiar with the latest research on the new economy
• learn tools for planning during uncertain times
• build mental strength and resilience
• form valuable connections with a network of expert mentors and Alaska business owners.

We welcome applications from small business owners (less than 50 employees) in Southeast Alaska that have been operating for at least a year. Those outside of Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka as well as entrepreneurs of color are especially encouraged to apply.

FEATURED SPEAKERS:
Sindre Bornstein has a passion for innovation and sustainability and holds the role as Chief Commercial Officer in Yxney Maritime – a young company working towards a sustainable maritime industry by using data driven solutions for emissions reduction. Before joining Yxney he worked in the Norwegian foreign service as a diplomat in San Francisco/Silicon Valley and in Guatemala, and has a background from Statoil and Norsk Hydro working with business development both internationally and on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the Norwegian Business School, BI.

Isaac Vanderburg is the CEO of Launch Alaska and the fund manager for Launch Alaska Fund II — a $3m fund that invests directly in some of the accelerators’ cohort companies. Isaac has worked with hundreds of early stage companies and entrepreneurs responding to Alaska’s food, water, transportation and energy challenges. His previous roles include State Director at the Alaska Small Business Development Center and Operations Director for Chispa Group (now Afina Holdings) an import-export firm in Philadelphia that specializes in trade between the Delaware Valley and Chile. He completed the Energy Executive Leadership Program at the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) in Golden, CO as well the Energy Innovation and Emerging Technologies program at Stanford. Vanderburg sits on the Board of Commonwealth North, Greenstand.org, SXSW Pitch, and led the Energy & Energy Efficiency subcommittee and the Carbon Pricing subcommittee of Alaska’s Climate Action Leadership Team under Governor Walker. In 2019 Isaac offered testimony on the role of Energy Innovation to the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. He played four years of NCAA Division I soccer and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in El Salvador (’02).

Piper Foster Wilder is the Founder and CEO of 60Hertz Microgrids. The company develops software to maintain microgrids — from village infrastructure, to ocean-going vessels, to resiliency microgrids on critical infrastructure. Foster Wilder came to Alaska to serve as Deputy Director of the Renewable Energy Alaska Project in Anchorage. There she became acquainted with the opportunity and challenges of project development, financing, and maintenance of remote power grids.Foster Wilder was previously the Vice President of Amatis Controls, an Internet of Things company. There, she developed their thermal metering product line. During this time she was named in Aspen Magazine’s Ten Women of Aspen. Foster Wilder is a Humboldt Fellow and worked at Ecologic Institute in Berlin for several years and authored several papers on siting of utility-scale renewables. She lives in Anchorage with her husband and daughter.

Kristian Bye is Director at Innovation Norway Silicon Valley. Innovation Norway contributes to sustainable growth and exports for Norwegian businesses through capital and expertise. Our offices abroad support the most promising companies in their ambitions to scale in international markets. Kristian Bye is director of Innovation Norway in Silicon Valley, an office that collaborates closely with Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland at the Nordic Innovation House. Kristian has 18 years experience from the Norwegian advertising industry, has co-founded and exited from a successful solar light company and has supported over 200 start-ups as a mentor and business developer before joining Innovation Norway in 2020.

On November 18, we'll hear from Hans Vogel from Triverus. Founded in 2001, Palmer, Alaska-based Triverus has pioneered high-efficiency outdoor surface cleaning equipment that is used by the U.S. military. Additionally, Triverus provides a cleaning and surface pollution prevention technology for airports, local governments, parking garages, and marine dry-dock operations. Triverus’ innovative cleaning technology was originally developed through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program when the company responded to a solicitation from the U.S. Office of Naval Research and Naval Sea Systems Command Carderock Division. Triverus’ Mobile Cleaning, Recovery, and Recycle System (MCRRS) technology was designed to efficiently clean Navy flight deck surfaces while keeping the landing surface from becoming slick, protecting aircrafts and crews. Over the years, the MCRRS has become more than just a cleaning tool and is now considered by many in the U.S. Navy as a mission critical piece of equipment.

The third in the ICE Jam StartupWeek Series - this will be a great opportunity to get into the weeds when discussing digital marketing automation and tactics to market a new startup on a tight budget, this event will feature the team at Alaska Center ICE (Center for Innovation, Commercialization, and Entrepreneurship) and their efforts and experience.

About: In this talk we will discuss high level best practices for accounting and compliance of SBIR/STTR grants. Some topics discussed will be: how to access your grants funds, proper grant draw techniques, how to track your time and spending appropriately, indirect rates, reporting, and how to prepare for an audit.

Bio:
Chris Brasfield has over 12 years of experience with all aspects of grant accounting and administration. In this time he has overseen these tasks on more than 80 awarded SBIR and STTR grant programs. As Controller for multiple biotech companies, he has set up accounting structures from scratch, managed audits, and negotiated F&A rates with the government. Currently he is the owner of Brasfield Accounting in Homer, AK which services local small business accounting needs as well SBIR/STTR companies across the US.

The Alaska Native Professional Association is hosting their November virtual gathering alongside AK Startup Week this year with Lee Ryan, the President of Ryan Air.

Lee Ryan is Iñupiaq from Unalakleet. He is President of the largest 100% Iñupiaq-owned aviation company in the State of Alaska, and will speak about how Ryan Air started as a small Alaska business and grown to what it is today.

Join us for another edition of Business & Brews to learn about Uncle Leroy's Coffee from the ground up.  Co-owners Austin Schwartz and Carla McConnell tell their origin story that began on a 1968 bus and has grown into a pair of Anchorage area coffee shops and a small batch roaster.

Learn about the ups and downs of sustaining a new business in the midst of COVID, starting up in a saturated market, and branding yourself using history, a story, and aesthetics. We will also be taking a virtual tour of their Midtown shop to learn more about manual espresso, slow brew coffee, and small-batch roasting. See how Uncle Leroy's Coffee intersects itself with coffee bar and coffeehouse culture to stay competitive, collaborative, and community-oriented.

This event will be part of the annual Alaska Startup Week and will be cohosted by a diverse list of groups advocating for more entrepreneurship opportunities in BIPOC communities such Alaska Black Chamber of Commerce, NAACP Anchorage Economic Development Committee, Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of Alaska, Sol de Medianoche AND will include allies such as Alaska Start Ups, 49th State Fund, and Municipality of Anchorage: Office of Equal Opportunity and more.

The objective of this event is to provide training, resources, and networking opportunities to BIPOC owned businesses (this means 51% or more owned by a person of color) operating in Alaska to encourage the formation and growth of as many as possible. It will teach fundamentals to start or grow our businesses, sharing resources available in our communities and nationwide, introduce different entrepreneur ecosystem leaders in Alaska, and give time to address specific needs in each of our cultural communities and how to bring opportunities and address disparities to Alaska.
